Coach Mark Markwell has a team that's long on ability but short on experience after graduating a group that finished 20-7 and made the sectional final featuring standouts Chelsea Simon, Megan Clampitt and Jill Nagle, among others. "We are a young team with a lot of last year's JV players moving up to the varsity," Markwell said. "Our goals are to be competitive and work hard. We have some strong leadership with our seniors and good support from the rest of the team."

On the same day, the Associated Press reported President-elect Barack Obama would nominate Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State. And swimmer Emily Fogle, a Barrington junior, got beat in the 100-yard breaststroke in the State Meet prelims. St. Charles North's Angie Chokran edged the Filly 1:02.85-1:02.91 back then, claiming the top seed for the next day's finals at Evanston.

Barrington senior Emily Fogle finished her scholastic swimming career, successfully defending her title in the 100-yard breaststroke with a 1:02.64 at the IHSA championships Saturday. She was the first Barrington girl to win a state title for a swimming competition in 2008 (though divers Sara Hershman and Liz Olson won titles in the past). She also finished third in the 200 individual medley and teamed with underclassmen Erika Elliott, Anne Jacobsen and Kate Valente to take fourth in the 200 freestyle r

As Barrington High School's Student Council secretary, senior Emily Fogle must submit minutes from meetings. Competing in her final State Meet -- at New Trier on Saturday -- Fogle needed only a minute and some change (1:02.64) to successfully defend her 100-yard breaststroke title. Setting the state record in the event -- Stevenson's Ashley Wanland went 1:01.83 in 2007 -- would have been sweet, a script any kind of secretary would love.

There was no state record in the 100-yard breaststroke for Barrington senior Emily Fogle, but she did get to savor the taste of victory once more. Fogle took command of the race early and stayed comfortably ahead of the entire championship heat on Saturday at New Trier High School, finishing in 1:02.64 to repeat as state champ. Her time was also a bit slower than the one she delivered in Friday's preliminaries - that one, a 1:02.27, was the fastest Fogle has yet performed the race, and it's the third-

In any meet, you really can't ask for more than a personal best, and I got that (Friday)   -Emily Fogle

Halfway through Barrington's 200-yard medley relay in Friday's girls swimming state meet preliminaries, a collective gasp went up in the crowd as the unthinkable had happened. It looked like the Fillies' top-seeded team had "jumped," or left the block too soon, on the exchange between the breaststroke and butterfly legs. After the race had finished, the dreaded letters "DQ" flashed on the results board next to Barrrington's name, confirming the bad news for the Fillies.

Let's just say we let our emotions show   -Emily Fogle

For someone who feels more energetic swimming on the final day of the state meet, Olivia Scott sure had plenty of fuel in her gas tank during Friday's preliminary round at New Trier. The Rosary senior had the top time in both of her individual events and is within striking distance of the state record in each race after recording personal best times. Scott's 53.23 in the 100-yard butterfly is just .12 off Mary DeScenza's state record and her clocking of 2:02.51 in the 200 individual medley was over two

Libertyville's coach is E.R. (Erik Rogers), and one of the team's best swimmers is M.D. (freshman Morgan Dickson). But the Wildcats' team manager is not named Denise Defibrillator. All kinds of hearts got quite a workout early in Saturday's Vernon Hills Sectional.

Anne Jacobsen had no reason to repair the broken clipboard on Saturday. Following the medal ceremony, Barrington head coach Jim Bart led about six of his swimmers to the back parking lot. "As a celebration of both flyers making it, we broke the clipboard," Bart said.

Veronika Jedryka has struggled with the back half of the 500-yard freestyle most of this season. But the problems are all in the past, as the Buffalo Grove High School freshman turned on the jets over the final 250 to win a Barrington Sectional title in a personal-record 5:09.66 on Saturday. When the second 250 commenced, Jedryka led Barrington freshman Danielle Elliott by 1.47 seconds.
